Are You Spending Enough Time in Your Flame?

Jun 25, 2026

One of the most powerful leadership shifts you can make is to spend more time in your flame.

In every business, there are two types of work: flame work and wax work.

Your flame is the work that energises you. It's where you create momentum, inspire others, solve bigger problems, and make your greatest contribution. Like a flame, you bring light to the people around you. And the best part is, a flame can light another flame.

Wax work, on the other hand, is the work that supports the business but doesn't necessarily require your unique strengths. The important thing to remember is that your wax work may be someone else's flame work.

As a leader, your goal isn't to eliminate wax work altogether. You need the wax because it supports the flame. But you should only spend enough time there to build a system, train someone, or delegate the task—then get back to where you create the most value.

When leaders spend too much time in their wax, they become stuck. They lose energy, momentum and the ability to lead at their best.

The highest-performing leaders intentionally design their role around their strengths. They empower others to step into their own flame while creating systems that reduce the amount of wax work across the business.

So here's a question to reflect on:

What percentage of your week are you spending in your flame?

The more time you spend there, the more you'll enjoy what you do, the greater your impact will be, and the more momentum your team will create.

Remember… great leadership isn't about doing everything but about doing the right things, and helping everyone else do the same.
